New York City police say a dapper-looking man who managed to steal $2 million worth of jewelry apparently didn't think to wear gloves during the armed heist at the Watch Standard Jeweler wholesale store in Manhattan on Tuesday.
"The gunman touched a lot of stuff in the store. He didn't have on gloves. We think he left behind a lot of prints," an unnamed law enforcement source told the New York Post.
Police hope to get a match when they run the fingerprints of the man they believe robbed the Diamond District store with an accomplice at gunpoint in broad daylight. But "that depends on whether he has a record," the official told The Post.
"We're also trying facial identification. We're searching the surveillance image of the perp against the mugshot database. It he's in there, we'll hopefully get a match."
Armed with a handgun, the suspect, dressed in a Kangol hat and trench coat, pretended to be a deliveryman with a package to gain access to the business located on the eighth floor of the West 47th Street building.
"They came in and said, 'Give me all your stuff!' " Danny Mikhaylov, who owns the diamond shop, told the newspaper.
The robber held Mikhaylov, his father, his sister and his friend at gunpoint. Investigators said the thief took hold of the sister's arm to keep control of her.
The heist turned bloody when the owner's father, Boris, walked into the store and was struck across the head with the thief's gun. His injuries were minor, the owner said.
Meanwhile, the suspect plundered the safe and he and his accomplice fled the scene with a bag labeled with the letter "K," police told The Post.
"It was $2 million in jewelry, mostly watches," the owner said.
Authorities are still looking for the gunman, said to be a black man between the age of 40 and 50, and his accomplice, who was wearing a black hoodie, jeans and a red cap.
