PlayStation Set to Celebrate Its 20th Anniversary (WATCH IT)

Sony of Japan has released a rather cool anniversary video to celebrate 20 years of the PlayStation brand. This video comes about three weeks early, as the original PlayStation was unleashed on Japan Dec. 3, 1994. The PlayStation launched on Sept. 9, 1995 in North America, Sept. 29 in Europe, November 15 in Australia, and Korea finally got its PlayStation fix in 1996.

You can check out the video below, and this cool, anniversary web site that Sony has put up to mark this occasion. Both the web site and the video are in Japanese, FYI.

According to Polygon, "The Sony console had a massive impact on the gaming industry, becoming the first gaming console to ship 100 million units and receiving plenty of praise for its adult, consumer electronic design, even from the likes of Bill Gates. It was the first console to successfully use the CD-Rom format for games."

My personal memories of the PlayStation go right to the beginning as I actually imported a unit from Japan early in 1995. I only had a few games, but I recall people being blown away by the awesome graphics and sound shown off by titles like "Ridge Racer" and "Battle Arena Toshinden." That doesn't seem all that long ago, especially 20 years ago, but apparently it is. Time sure does fly.
