Amazon Updates Kindle Software to Allow Book Sharing with Family Members

Amazon released a new software update for Kindle on Wednesday that lets you share ebooks with the rest of your family.

The lucky devices that will receive the update automatically in the next few weeks are the $79 Kindle, the $199 Kindle Voyage, and the most recent version of the $179 Kindle Paperwhite, according to PC Magazine. Among the new features on the tablet is Family Library, which you can use to link your account to that of your spouse or partner to access their books.

The e-commerce giant is also updating the Kindle with a feature called World Wise, which automatically provides definitions for words readers have a difficult time understanding, thus making the read an easier experience.

Kindle users will also get access to Amazon's FreeTime Unlimited, a subscription service that provides access to kids books like the Harry Potter series for $2.99 a month, TechCrunch reported.

The new software also comes with a new and improved X-Ray feature that shows details about the plot and characters in the book you're reading, as well as a new search tool that shows results from the Kindle store to help you find what you're looking for.

Kindle owners will also find greater integration with Goodreads that will let them add books from their Kindle libraries to their Goodreads shelves, share reading progress, and see friends updates, ratings, and reviews for different titles, PC Magazine reported. The "About This Book" feature will show readers information about their books while they're reading them, such as who the author is and where in the series the story takes place.

Readers who can't wait for the automatic update can download it now for free at the Amazon website.

"We can't wait to hear what customers think about these new software features," said Peter Larsen, vice president of Amazon Devices.
