Thai police reported an American trying to ship infant body parts to the United States. The delivery was thwarted by a call from the shipping company, according to CNN.
Police in Thailand said they received a call on Saturday from a DHL office outside of Bangkok. Workers had discovered an infant skull, internal organs and a few pieces of human skin while scanning shipments for delivery, according to CNN. The body parts were stored in formaldehyde in sealed plastic bags.
"We have talked with an American who was trying to send the parcels to the USA, but we could not press any charges on him and we are not quite sure which laws we can apply to him," Chief of Bang Pongpang police station Col. Adisorn Semsawat said, according to CNN.
The unidentified American told police that he purchased the body parts at a flea market, but he forgot the location. He paid about $100 for them, according to CNN.
This is not the first time infant body parts have been trafficked. Some Thais practice black magic and believe babies' body parts have supernatural powers. Some pieces provide protection; others bring success in business, according to CNN.
In 2010, police followed a smell to the Phai-nguern Chotinaram temple in central Bangkok. The temple was storing more than 2,000 illegally aborted fetuses. Three people were arrested, including two morticians.
