NFL Rumors: Adrian Peterson Suspension Likely?

A decision on Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson's NFL status is expected Monday or Tuesday, the Washington Post reports.

Sources for the publication said that a ruling on Peterson is expected "soon" and that a suspension for the star ball carrier from the NFL is "very possible."

Peterson has missed the past nine games after being placed on the NFL's exempt list in September stemming from a disciplinary incident involving his 4-year-old son. He recently reached a plea agreement with Texas prosecutors to avoid jail time.

Peterson and the NFL are at odds over his current standing.

"The NFL Players Association has filed a grievance on Peterson's behalf seeking to have him reinstated from the exempt list pending the outcome of the league's review under the personal conduct policy," Mark Maske wrote. "A hearing on the grievance is scheduled to be conducted Monday afternoon by conference call.

"The league could suspend Peterson without pay under the terms of the conduct policy. An NFL official said Saturday that Peterson and the union declined to participate in a hearing Friday to review Peterson's case. The union issued a written statement Sunday by Peterson saying the hearing did not comply with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement."

There have been rumors that should Peterson be reinstated, the Vikings will look to trade the 2012 MVP. However, other NFL observers such as Grantland's Bill Simmons hope to see a different course of action.

"I'm a big believer in second chances if they're earned, so no," Simmons wrote when asked if the Vikings should release Peterson. "I'd rather see the Vikings work with Peterson to become an advocate against child abuse, much like how Michael Vick raised so much awareness for animal abuse. Peterson could have an impact if he wanted to have one. Does he now understand that he went way, way, WAY overboard in disciplining his son? I sure hope so. Does he now understand that it's not a good idea to whip your 4-year-old? I sure hope so. If he's not interested in learning from his mistakes, or figuring out how those mistakes could help other people ... then, and only then, would I release him. Who wants to root for someone like that?"
