When police attempted to arrest Indian spiritual leader Sant Rampal, who is still wanted for questioning over a 2006 murder case, on Tuesday 190 people were injured.
In July 2006 Rampal, now 61, and his supporters participated in a violent clash with another group, killing one person, The Associated Press reported. He and 38 others were charged with murder, among other offenses.
Rampal was released form jail on bail, but his bail ended up being cancelled after his followers threatened lawyers in a courtroom, reported AP.
Rampal was exempt for 43 court summonses since 2010 for the murder. The court house in the state capital (Chandigarh) is 155-miles from his ashram in Haryana's Hisar district and Rampal's supporters say he is too ill to make the journey there, reported AP.
The court set an ultimate deadline to finally try Rampal in court on Monday, Nov. 17 - which the spiritual leader also ignored.
Police then went to arrest Rampal, resulting in hours of fighting with police armed with tear gas, batons and bulldozers, AP reported.
"We have given an ultimatum to Rampal and others to come out," said Shriniwas Vashisht, the director-general of police in Haryana, about 110 miles from New Delhi. "We want to ensure that innocent people inside the ashram are not harmed."
Vashisht told AP he believes some of the people inside the ashram were being held there against their will.
During the attempted arrest 190 people, including over 100 security forces, were injured, according to an AP report.
