Maryland Man Who Tossed Boiling Water On Roommate Jailed For 25 Years

A Maryland man was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday for throwing boiling water on his roommate following an argument over food, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Donte Frye, a Baltimore man with two prior attempted murder convictions, was found guilty of assault and reckless endangerment in June for the 2013 incident that began when Frye thought his roommate ate his breakfast sausages, prosecutors said.

Frye lured his roommate to the top of their home's basement stairs and flung a pot of boiling water in his face, prosecutors said. The victim, who has not been named, was knocked back down the stairs and struck his head on a door. He suffered second-degree burns and was left disfigured, prosecutors said according to CBS DC.

But the defendant's attorney, Stephen Beatty, argued his client got into a "mutual affray" with the roommate and that prosecutors were exaggerating his injuries.

Before Frye was sentenced to 25 years without parole, a judge was told the 39-year-old showed no remorse for the attack, The Baltimore Sun reported. Frye was recorded in jail phone conversations allegedly saying boiling water "ain't an actual weapon."

His lawyer said the statement was taken out of context and that Frye was referring to the assault charges, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Prosecutors said Frye has a prior conviction for stabbing a different roommate in 1993 and for stabbing yet another in 2004, CBS DC reported.

Beatty said he will appeal Monday's sentencing.
