People gave Jimmy Kimmel the honor to announce the magazine's 2014 Sexiest Man Alive and the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" host bestowed the title upon Chris Hemsworth.
The 31-year-old Hemsworth is the 29th man to receive the title that Mel Gibson first held in 1985 at age 29. The magazine has named its sexy cover boy every year except 1994.
Over the last year, the Aussie actor reprised his role as Marvel's Thor in "Thor: The Dark World." The God of Thunder will reassemble with his fellow Avengers next summer in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and star again in a third solo installment, "Thor: Ragnarok" on July 28, 2017.
He'll also star in the new Michael Mann film "Blackhat" in January, and teams up again with his "Rush" director Ron Howard for the historical drama "In the Heart of the Sea" in March.
Hemsworth married his wife, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, in 2010. They welcomed their first child, daugther India Rose in 2012 and twin sons, Tristan and Sasha, in March of this year.
"I think you've bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights around the house," he told People for the cover story. "I can just say to [my wife], 'Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don't need to do the dishes anymore, I don't need to change nappies. I'm above that. I've made it now.' "
The magazine chose "The Voice" coach Adam Levine as its 2013 Sexiest Man Alive. Carson Daly made the announcement during a live episode of the NBC singing competition show.
The past year also saw many of the past sexiest men settling down in their personal lives. George Clooney and Brad Pitt both took the wedding plunge again, and Ryan Reynolds and wife Blake Lively are expecting their first child.
People's Sexiest Man Alive issue hits newsstands on Friday, Nov. 21.
