NCAA Basketball News: San Diego State Men’s Coach Gets Extension at 70 Years Old

San Diego State coach Steve Fisher will turn 70 years old in March, but that doesn't mean he's lost the fire for coaching. ESPN reports that Fisher has agreed to a three-year extension with the school.

"It still doesn't feel like work," Fisher said. "I feel the same exhilaration and excitement as I did 15 years ago."

Typically, 70-year-olds try to avoid too much excitement. Even Al Michaels just sits in a booth and talks leisurely until a game ends. But Fisher isn't ready for the dreaded R-word (retirement) just yet. Despite speculation that this might be his final season, the Aztecs will benefit from Fisher's leadership for a few more years.

The San Diego State program was one of the worst in the Mountain West conference. Under Fisher's guidance, they have made five consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. The team won its season opener against Utah last night and has recruited three of the top 100 players this season.

Fisher is perhaps best known for his surprising national title run after taking over at Michigan in 1989 right before the Big Dance.

"It really was more of an administrative decision," Fisher said of the deal.
