Bob Marley Becoming First Brand Of Marijuana

Bob Marley's name is becoming the first global brand of marijuana called Marley Natural, which some say could be the "next Starbucks" of pot.

The late reggae singer is arguably the celebrity most associated with pot, so it makes sense that pot distributors want to use his name.

"My dad would be so happy to see people understanding the healing power of the herb," said Cedella Marley, the musician's daughter, in a statement announcing the launch. "He viewed the herb as something spiritual that could awaken our well-being, deepen our reflection, connect us to nature and liberate our creativity."

The Marley family is teaming up with a private equity firm to launch Marley Natural, which of course will offer "heirloom Jamaican cannabis strains" - Marley's favorite.

Cedella called Marley Natural an "authentic way to honour his legacy by adding his voice to the conversation about cannabis and helping end the social harms caused by prohibition," The Guardian reported.

The company will be based in New York, but will sell paraphernalia and topicals worldwide.

"There is probably no better known cultural icon related to cannabis than Bob Marley," Brendan Kennedy, chief executive of Privateer Holdings, said to The Guardian. "He called cannabis the herb and he said the herb is the healing of the nation. And he wasn't talking about a country, he was talking about mankind."

When the brand debuts in late 2015 Bob Marley could potentially get bumped to the top of Forbes' annual list of the highest paid dead celebrities. He was the fifth highest paid dead celebrity this year, but the brand could push him to the top. (Michael Jackson is currently number one)
