Rocky Mountain Climber Missing For Three Days As Search Continues

A Colorado man is still missing after attempting to summit Longs Peak three days ago, and rescuers are searching for him, 9 News reported on Wednesday.

Peter Jeffris, 25, drove a car to the park, which was found in the parking lot at the Longs Peak Trailhead. When he didn't show up at work on Monday, friends and coworkers reported him missing.

Friends say he may have traveled on the Cables Route, though it's unclear what path he exactly took.

A small part of the area was searched by a park team until nightfall on Monday, according to a statement from Rocky Mountain National Park. The north face, Chasm Cirque Keyhole Route and the area along the Longs Peak Trail were searched by a team of 32 on Tuesday.

Sunday and Monday brought high winds, snow and frigid temperatures, making the search difficult. The case was no further along as of Tuesday either, with rescuers facing 50- to 55-mile-per-hour winds. They said it was difficult to keep their balance in the face of 65-mph gusts.

Wednesday's weather may be the same, according to local reports.

Jeffris is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds with an athletic build. His friends say he has hiked in the area in winter three times before. His cell phone pinged in the Longs Peak area on Sunday, according to search volunteers. He was allegedly not prepared to stay the night and just wanted to climb the mountain, according to the Denver Post.

Jeffris is a University of Colorado graduate and holds a job as a robotics engineer at Broomfield's Altius Space Machines. He has also held jobs at Louisville's Sierra Nevada Corp. and the University of Colorado.
