Ford Introduces 2016 Explorer Deluxe Model, Features New Engine & Platinum Trim

Ford Motor Company introduced its new Explorer SUV, which sports a new engine and a top-level Platinum trim.

The 2016 Ford Explorer made its debut at a preview event for this week's auto show, showing off an oval logo that isn't blue, a first for a Ford vehicle, according to USA Today. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker is targeting drivers looking for an SUV with extra features they can't find in the company's Limited and Sports Models.

Ford has sold 7 million Explorers since the SUV debuted in 1990 as a 1991 model. Two hundred thousand Explorers are sold each year on average.

Jim Farley, executive vice president of Ford, said the Explorer serves as the standard for all of the automaker's SUVs, adding that the vehicle "is the utility DNA for all Ford utilities."

Other features of the new Explorer include a real aluminum and wood trim, a 500-watt Sony audio system and standard active park and lane-keeping assist system, Fox News reported.

The vehicle also comes with a new grille and headlights, a panoramic moonroof, Platinum-specific chrome exterior details and a standard 365 hp 3.5-liter twin turbocharged V6.

Thanks to the SUV's 180-degree view front camera, drivers will be able to see traffic when coming out of a sight-blocked space that they wouldn't be able to spot otherwise, USA Today reported. Other additions include a smart charging system and built-in washers for cleaning the front and rear cameras.

Ford says "box-checkers," those who check off all the option boxes so they get everything in their new car, will be big fans of the Platinum model.

The 2016 Ford Explorer is expected to appear in showrooms by summer of 2015, according to Fox News. SUV fans still have to wait for Ford to announce the price of the new Explorer.
