A baby giraffe sucessfully walked on two legs for the first time Tuesday according to CBS News.
"Well everything's new to him if you think about it," said Sheri Horiszny, the zoo's director of animal programs. "He's four days old so he'd never seen a bird before, he's never seen rocks before. The wind feels different outside of the barn so just everything is new. So he's reacting to that and then running back to what he knows, and then coming back out for more."
The animal, named baby buttercup, is 186 pounds, and 6-and-a-half feet tall CBS News reported. He strutted around his designated zoo property while his mother Audrey monitored him before getting into a gallop at the fascination of zoo goers.
Visitors who saw spectacle were amazed by the long-necked creature's new found ability.
"I think he is super cute," Lynnea Ramos told CBS News.
Many other Masai giraffes have come into the world at the California zoo. One other has gone to a zoo in Wako, Texas, CBS News reported. A second has made its home in Phoenix. Zookeepers expect the sanctuary's female giraffe, Betty Lou to birth babies of her own in March 2015
"Because they are just over 100 Masai giraffes in captivity in North America, each birth and each giraffe is very important," said Horiszny in a statement. "I'm very proud of our sire Michael (the zoo's only male giraffe), as he's now clearly a proven breeder, and his genetics greatly help the diversity of our Masai population."
