Taylor Swift opened with "Blank Space." Her bestie Selena Gomez finished her performance of "The Heart Wants What It Wants" in tears, and Jennifer Lopez proved why Sir Mix-A-Lot wrote "Baby Got Back" about her big booty at the 2014 American Music Awards.
Pitbull served as the emcee for the annual ceremony held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 23. He also performed a medley of songs with Ne-Yo including "Don't Stop the Party," "Fireball" and "Time of Our Lives."
Taylor Swift accepted the Dick Clark Award for Excellence. Her speech included a special thanks to fans for proving album sales are still relevant and indirectly affirmed her stand against Spotify. Katy Perry and One Direction each won three awards, the most for any performer on the night.
Perry collected Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist and Single of the Year for "Dark Horse" featuring Juicy J. She accepted her awards via satellite from Australia, where she's on her Prismatic World Tour.
One Direction performed "Night Changes," the second single from their new album "Four," against a forest backdrop. Fans honored the boy band as Artist of the Year over heavyweights like Beyoncé and Perry. They also took home awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album for "Midnight Memories."
Iggy Azalea entered the night with six nominations but only walked away with two awards - Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for "The New Classic." Her performance with J. Lo to close out the ceremony made everyone forget about those four other possible wins.
