A put bull who acts as a "therapy dog" for a disabled girl in Louisiana will be taken away from the family in December due to a newly passed ordinance banning pit bulls and Rottweilers.
The Village of Moreauville passed an ordinance in October banning pit bulls and Rottweilers because they were deemed vicious, CNN reported. The ordinance goes into effect Dec. 1.
Owners who refuse to give up their dogs before the Dec. 1 deadline were warned that the village will come to owner's houses, dispose of the dog, and the owners will be fine, Joanna Armand told CNN.
It's unclear of how the village is planning on disposing of the dogs.
"We had several residents that were complaining about not being able to walk along the neighborhoods because these dogs were basically running along town," Penn Lemolne, Village Alderman, told CNN.
Lemolne added that there were no documented dog attacks in the village from either breed.
The Armand family is petitioning against the ordinance. Their pit bull, Zeus, serves as a therapy dog for Armand's daughter, O'Hara, who suffers from severe neck problems and uses a Halo brace and a wheelchair.
"If anything ever happened to him I would just shut down," O'Hara told CNN.
The family created a petition on MoveOn to lift the ban, which has since accumulated over 160,500 signatures. The bill is also being petitioned by the family on the Facebook page Saving Zeus.
In the meantime, O'Hara is worrying about what will happen to her canine friend who helps her deal with her pained neck.
"If I'm in pain I can sit there and he notices it before I even make any noise," she told CNN.
