'Wonder Woman': Michelle MacLaren to Helm Stand-Alone Film

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michelle MacLaren has formally signed on to direct Warner Brothers' upcoming "Wonder Woman" film starring Gal Gadot. The director of some of the best episodes of "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," and" The Walking Dead" appeared on a shortlist for the coveted role last month, and went so far as to enter talks just two weeks ago. Now, she'll be bringing the flagship, DC superheroine to the big screen.

The Emmy Award winnning MacLaren gets the job over two other directors who met with the studio: "The Babadook's" Jennifer Kent, and "Homeland's" Lesli Linka Gatter. She won't just direct the film either; MacLaren has signed on early enough that she's been given the chance to assist the project's writers (who haven't been announced as of yet) and develop the story as well. We still don't know what overall plot will entail, or how the film will fit into the larger DC Cinematic Universe, but having MacLaren in charge of those things is great news, and shows that Warner Bros. isn't playing around here.

Produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, and Deborah Snyder, "Wonder Woman" stars Gal Gadot (who will make her big screen debut as the Princess Diana in 2016's "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice") and will lasso big screens everywhere on June 23, 2017.

Personally, I think that McLaren is a fine choice to direct, but Gadot in the role of Wonder Woman is the larger concern in my mind. While a beautiful woman, Gadot seems to lack the physical presence needed to play the Amazonian princess convincingly. It will be interesting to see what happens with the standalone "Wonder Woman" film if Gadot's performance is panned (which I have a sinking feeling will be) in "Batman vs. Superman."
