Matthew McConaughey to Star in Film Series Adaptation of Stephen King's 'The Stand'

The resurgence of Matthew McConaughey's career continues. The 2014 Academy Award winner for Best Actor is set to star as the antagonist in an upcoming series adaptation of Stephen King's post-apocalyptic 1978 novel "The Stand," according to The Guardian.

McConaughey will play the role of Randall Flag, the main villain with otherworldly powers who lives in what was once Las Vegas.

Josh Boone, who recently directed the movie adaptation of John Green's young adult novel "The Fault In Our Stars," is at the helm of "The Stand's" transformation from page to screen. He told Kevin Smith on his podcast this week that the 1200-page book will be split into four separate movies.

The novel is one of King's most heralded. It takes place after a virus takes out a large portion of the world's population and pins the remaining survivors, some good and some bad, against each other.

McConaughey won last year's Best Actor award for his portrayal of AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in "Dallas Buyers Club," and recently appeared in Christopher Nolan's space-based saga "Interstellar" alongside Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine and Jessica Chastain. The star also played a lead role in HBO's hit true crime series "True Detective" alongside Woody Harrelson earlier this year.
