Turkey-Eating Record Broken By Joey Chestnut

A competitive eater devoured over nine pounds of turkey in a whopping, record-breaking 10 minutes.

Winner Joey Chestnut, 37, was one of 10 contestants in the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut on Saturday where they were faced with the challenge of eating as much as they can of a 20 pound turkey.

The contest is called "a battle of technique, speed, capacity and Thanksgiving spirit" by Major League Eating, which is the competitive-eating version of the NFL, reported NY Daily News.

Eating almost half the turkey alone, Chestnut almost doubled the previous turkey-eating record which was held by Sonya Thomas, who ate 5.25 pounds of turkey in November 2011, according to Major League Eating.

"I stuck with my plan going for the bottom meat first then got the breasts and then just drank and drank and swallowed," a fatigued Chestnut said after the event. "It's before Thanksgiving when everybody is a competitive eater. Turkey is awesome. I'm just happy to be here and was able to win today."

Chestnut, a San Jose, California resident, holds the title of the top competitive eater in the world.

After devouring over nine pounds of turkey Chestnut went home $5,000 richer.

Now his only hope is that he will have enough room for more turkey on Thursday.
