Nintendo has the hot hand this week, first finding sales success with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and now with its latest handheld titles, "Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire" for the 3DS.
The two role-playing games have between them sold over three million copies in three days, according to Siliconera, and Nintendo hasn't even released the titles overseas as of yet.
These games are actually remakes of old, GameBoy Advance titles, first released back in 2002, and their success vindicates Nintendo's strategy of taking old games and giving them with a modern twist. The Big "N" employed a similar strategy with the role-playing game "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" for 3DS, and is releasing a modernized version of Nintendo 64 classic "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" in the spring for the 3DS as well.
By way of comparison, "Pokémon X and Y" for the 3DS sold four million copies over two days last year, but they were both highly anticipated, new games and also had the benefit of a simultaneous global launch. "Pokémon X and Y" went on to sell over 12 million copies worldwide when things were all said and done.
