Pregnant Woman Struck By Car Dies, But Baby Lives

A pregnant woman in Pittsburgh was hit and killed by an elderly driver who jumped a curb while trying to park, pinning her against the wall of a drug store, CBS News reported on Thursday.

Jodie Guthrie's full-term baby was delivered by physicians but was in critical condition as of Wednesday night. No information will be released through Thanksgiving, a hospital spokesperson said.

The 30-year-old mother was sitting outside of the North Side drugstore when 88-year-old Allan Massie attempted to park in a parking space. According to police, instead of hitting the brake, the man hit the gas instead. It's not yet known if the man will face charges in the woman's death.

Massie had his 61-year-old wife with him in the car, and they were both taken to be questioned by police, according to the Post-Gazette.

Guthrie died from her injuries roughly 30 minutes after the accident.

"This is a tragedy all around," police Cmdr. RaShall M. Brackney said. "The couple was extremely upset about the accident."

The man has a handicapped license plate on his Dodge Caravan, but police are checking to see if he had taken any medication that could have impaired his driving.

Guthrie's death happened on the same day as the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old pregnant woman in New York, which occurred when she was bringing her children to school. Her daughter was born alive but later died.
