Mark Sanchez surprisingly led the Philadelphia Eagles to an impressive 33-10 victory over the Cowboys in Dallas yesterday. Unsurprisingly, the man he replaced, Nick Foles, is itching to get back under center.
Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that Foles is "healing as expected" from a broken collarbone. Bowen did say, however, that Foles is still unable to take a hit. A CT scan revealed that an increase in strengthening work is possible, though.
A timetable for Foles' return has still not been set. Word had leaked out of the Philly organization that the front office had "soured" on Foles even before his injury. His interception rate had spiked this season after an unsustainably positive touchdown-to-turnover ratio last season.
Sanchez has played decently while filling in for Foles. The Eagles are 4-1 with Sanchez under center and he has thrown for 1,404 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 63.4 percent of his passes. Some NFL observers argue that head coach Chip Kelly's offensive system will produce big numbers regardless of who is taking snaps at quarterback. This would obviously lessen Foles' value to the team. Additionally, Kelly has been connected to his former quarterback at Oregon, Marcus Mariota, with speculation that the Eagles could trade up in the 2015 NFL draft to select the Heisman Trophy candidate.
Either way, if Sanchez continues to play well, the Eagles will be less inclined to rush Foles back until he is 100 percent healthy. Foles is under contract for one more season at just $660,000 base salary. All things considered, it appears as if Foles' time in Philly could be coming to an end.
