'Guardians of the Galaxy': Director Gunn Talks Rocket and Groot Spin-Off, Nova's Appearance in Sequel

Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" is obviously an important IP for the studio these days, and director James Gunn has indicated that a stand-alone film with Groot and Rocket Raccoon is possible.

It has been bandied about the internet for past few months that with the very colorful and variant squad of characters from "Guardians of the Galaxy," it would certainly be possible to create several solo flicks centering on those characters.

Gunn concurs, and in a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the filmmaker was asked which characters he'd like to see get their own solo feature. He replied, "While it seems pretty obvious Groot and Rocket would be good candidates, I can't pick a favorite."

"I'd like to see solo features from all of them," Gunn said. "Obviously there's a great Rocket and Groot movie that could come out of this. I love many of the characters. I love all these characters so much it's hard to say who I would like to see made into a solo movie by someone else. It depends on who that someone else is. The truth is, I'd rather not see a solo movie made poorly by someone who didn't understand the character and whose heart wasn't in it."

In other "Guardians" news and speculation, many are wondering who we'll see in the 2017 sequel. Cosmic spaceman Nova is name that keeps popping up. And, as one of the flagship characters of the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, Nova is a major player in the fight against alien races like the Kree, and is a member of Xandar's Nova Corps. Considering that those three things were all featured in the first "Guardians" film, it would seem logical that Nova (the alter-ego of Earth-born Richard Rider) could be thrown into the mix. However, there's one big thing standing in the way of the fan-favorite character's big screen debut: James Gunn himself.

Gunn said that, while he doesn't have anything against Nova as a character, he feels strongly that Peter Quill be the only Earthling in the film. He elaborates a bit more on his Facebook page, stating: "I don't want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans... I have nothing against Nova in future movies, but it doesn't serve the movie right this moment."

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is now available on Blu-ray, and also for immediate digital download on Amazon.
