An athlete from Ohio State that was found in a trash receptacle with what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head is being mourned by his university while police look into his death, 10TV on Sunday.
The body of Kosta Karageorge, 22, was found in the dumpster on Sunday by a woman and her son who were looking for items. The football player had went missing four days earlier after telling his parents in a text message that a concussion messed with his head. A gun was found in the dumpster with him, Sgt. Rich Weiner said.
Karageorge was on the Buckeyes wrestling team for three years, joining the team as a walk-on this season and played one game.
Dr. Jim Brochers, the team's doctor, said that he couldn't comment on the medical state of athletes.
"We are confident in our medical procedures and policies to return athletes to participation following injury or illness," Brochers said.
University athletic officials said the incident was disheartening.
"It's hit the team hard," football team spokesman Jerry Emig said.
Karageorge's body was found just a couple hundred yards from his home and a half-block from the main area of campus. His roommates were the last to see him before he went on a walk, Fox News reported.
His mother, Susan Karageorge, said her son had several concussions and would go through periods of extreme confusion. At about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, he sent her a text messaging saying he had messed his head up.
"I am sorry if I am an embarrassment," the text said.
Some school teammates and several hundred people held a vigil on campus on Sunday.
Josh Fox described the man as a loyal friend and talented athlete.
"He would be down in a match but always found a way to get back up," Fox said.
