Lauren Graham already has her next project lined up once she says goodbye to "Parenthood" early next year. The 47-year-old actress is developing a new comedy series called "Kate on Later," which she will star in and write for NBC.
Graham will play a female entertainer breaking into the male-dominated world of late-night television, according to Deadline. The show follows the real changing of the guard in late-night TV that has produced no female hosts and may continue to shut women out for the next 40 years.
The former "Gilmore Girls" star co-wrote a script with Liz Tuccillo. The project comes from Warner Bros. and Ellen DeGeneres' production company A Very Good Produciton. The daytime talk-show host will also serve as an executive producer.
The show will center on the character Kate (Graham) "who thought her day job was all her life would amount to when an opportunity arises that's bigger than she ever dreamed possible. But that opportunity means she's going to have to break one of the last remaining glass ceilings - the world of late-night network television talk shows," according to Deadline.
Graham previously worked with DeGeneres to develop her book "Someday, Someday, Maybe" as a TV series for The CW. The network chose to pass on the project, and picked up Rob Thomas' zombie series "iZombie" instead.
She recently appeared in the movie "Merry Friggin' Christmas" with Joel McHale and Robin Williams (one of the last performances before his death). She will next star in the family adventure film "Max," about a dog who helped U.S. soldiers and Afghanistan and is adopted by his handler's family after a traumatic experience.
