The talks between free agent goaltender Martin Brodeur and the St. Louis Blues are apparently progressing well with a contract potentially coming sometime this week, according to TheFourthPeriod.com.
"According to a source close to the situation, TFP has learned that talks between the two sides are 'going well' and 'the next couple of days' should provide a clear understanding of what the future holds," the site reported.
Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch also reports that after just one day of practice, it sounds like the seemingly ageless goaltender can get signed to a contract as early as today.
"Based on Brodeur's first full day of practice with the team Monday, it seems very likely that the winningest goalie in NHL history will be signing with the team as early as today and could be starting in goal as early as Thursday," Timmermann wrote.
The 42-year-old Brodeur is still considered an unrestricted free agent despite the fact that he agreed to a practice tryout with St. Louis late last week, according to Sports Illustrated.
Brodeur was brought in by the team as a response to the injury suffered by starting netminder Brian Elliott. Elliott sustained a lower-body injury in a game against the Ottawa Senators and was subsequently placed on injured reserve, according to the team's website. The Blues originally called up Jordan Binnington from their AHL affiliate under emergency conditions, then brought Brodeur in on a tryout basis.
The Blues play the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday, the Nashville Predators in Tennessee on Thursday and then venture to the no-longer cozy confines of Long Island to take on the Islanders on Saturday before returning home again.
"So far, so good," Brodeur said, per Timmermann. "I'm happy about what's going on the last few days... If they asked me, I think I would be OK to go out and play."
