'Law & Order' Star Saffron Burrows Reveals Secret Marriage to Wife of 16 Months

Did you know actress Saffron Burrows was a married woman?

In an interview with The Guardian, the 42-year-old former "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" actor revealed that she married longtime girlfriend Alison Balian, a writer for the "Ellen DeGeneres Show," about 16 months ago.

The couple eloped in August 2013 after the U.S. Supreme Court passed the Marriage Equality act. Burrows, who dated director Mike Figgis and was previously engaged to actor Alan Cumming, also gave birth to their son two years ago.

"I always liked the idea of being with someone for a while and then getting married, but I didn't know if I'd do it," she told the Guardian. "I'm quite a romantic, I probably thought I would do it."

"Also, I'm really proud of my family and who they are, these two individuals beside me. That's certainly my proudest achievement. And for my boy, I want to be honest with him because he deserves it - but also proud"

When asked why she and her wife finally decided to tie the knot, Burrows replied, "I don't thing want to answer that, only because it's so private, but I will say that we did elope. We hadn't told anyone and then I called my mum and she said, 'You haven't eloped! You only elope when you're young and in trouble!'"

Burrows did not share much details about her wedding day but admitted that she avoid talking about her marriage because she was afraid of being judge and what people would say.

"And I want us to live a very honest life with each other," she added. "I think for a while I was just avoiding conversations, in order to not be labeled in some way that I felt was limiting and not actually true to who I am. I really salute these young women who come out, but if I said I was gay that wouldn't be true."

Burrows described her relationship with Balian by saying, "I'm with this woman now who's extraordinary and that's what we're doing."

Prior to being married Balian dated actress Fiona Shaw, best known for portraying Mrs. Dursley in "Harry Potter."
