Intel announced Wednesday that it has formed a partnership with Luxottica Group aimed at helping the chipmaker in its quest to take over the wearables market.
The multi-year deal will have the two companies develop "fashion-forward" eyewear that consumers will want to wear, according to ZDNet. Different models of eyewear will be developed, including luxury and sport.
Intel's team-up with Luxottica follows almost a month after CEO Brian Krzanich promised shareholders that the company would use strategic, chip-powered partnerships to get a top spot in the wearables business. Krzanich claims that Intel will be able to make billions off wearables.
"The growth of wearable technology is creating a new playing field for innovation," he said. "Through our collaboration with Luxottica Group, we will unite our respective ecosystems and bring together Intel's leading-edge silicon and software technology with Luxottica's design innovation and consumer expertise."
Previous deals made by Intel in its wearable technology push include one with SMS Audio for smart headphones, one with watchmaker Fossil for accessories, and another with design house Opening Ceremony for the MICA luxury smart bracelet, CNET reported.
Luxottica's top spot in eyewear, due to its house brands Oakley, Ray-Ban and Oliver Peoples and licensed brands Coach, Versace, Chanel and Prada, should help Intel achieve its goal.
"We expect the combination of our expertise to help drive a much faster pace of innovation and push the envelope of what's possible," said Krzanich .
Intel plans on making its first eyewear product available in 2015.
