Who knew a power nap could lead to such dire circumstances?
One German banker learned the hard way not to doze off at work. She took a second to put her head down while computing a transfer request and inadvertently pressed hard on the number two, holding it down with her head and fingertips. This changed the amount of money being shuttled from 62.40 euros to 222 million euros, (around $293 million). 222,222,222.22 euros, were transferred, to be exact.
The misstep was found during a customary check of the internal system, but the employee's transfer had already been approved on the receiving end.
The bank employee was fired on the spot for her mistake, after working for the company for 26 years. Her employers checked her records after they noticed the enormous mistake, and saw that she wasn't doing the job they expected.
On April 2, 2012, she looked at 603 payments for less than 1.4 seconds, between 1.5-3 seconds checking out 105 payments, and a bit more than three seconds examining 104 payments, according to a testimony given to a German court and reported by CNN Money.
After she got fired, the employee went to court in Frankfurt, showing her case to the regional labor judge in Germany's financial capital. She won the case, and the 48-year-old woman was given back her job.
The court ruled that although her transgression was severe, the bank should have given her a warning instead of expelling her from the company.
