A man who deliberately entered a lion cage at a Barcelona zoo was mauled by three lions Sunday afternoon.
The 45-year-old unnamed man dressed in camouflage was rescued alive from the cage by authorities and taken to a hospital in "serious condition" for multiple bites, reported Mirror.
Police and firefighters were called to the scene to help rescue the man.
The man's motive for entering the cage is unknown, but reports claim he has a history of activism - he previously protested against abortion by clinging to La Pedrera (a landmark Barcelona building). The victim was also arrested in September for burning a flag at a monument to Rafael Casanova.
"The security system makes it impossible for a person to fall into the enclosure. It cannot have been by accident, to enter (the enclosure) you have to want to go in," chief firefighter of the Bomberos de Barcelona, Hector Carmona, said to Mail Online.
The attack is still under investigation.
