Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has run the gamut of the film world from action to comedy to animation, but his next role will require a skill he has yet to show off: his singing abilities.
The "Furious 7" star will voice the role of demi-god Maui in the upcoming animated movie "Moana" from Disney Animation Studios.
"Excited to star as 'Maui' in Disney's next big animated musical, MOANA. Incredible story! **clears throat #TimeToSing," Johnson tweeted on Dec. 3.
Disney has not confirmed his role and no official deal is in place yet, according to The Wrap. The studio also has not found the actress who will play the title character, "a born navigator" who comes from the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania.
Moana will set sail for a fabled island and, along the way, team up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui. They will "traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore," according to Disney.
"Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself," co-director John Musker said in October. "She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences."
Johnson has done well to balance his tough, action roles such as in the "Fast & Furious" franchise and his family-oriented roles like "The Game Plan" and "Tooth Fairy." He also continues to make appearances as his wrestling persona "The Rock" in the WWE arena.
He reprises his role as Luke Hobbs in the "Furious 7," which premieres on April 3. He also stars in the earthquake action movie "San Andreas" (opens on May 29) and will play the DC Comics villain Black Adam in the upcoming film "Shazam!" (set to premiere in 2019).
"Moana" will premiere in theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
