Domestic Violence Victim Fired: Teacher And Children Banned From School Due To Abusive Ex-Husband

A California teacher was fired from her job at Holy Trinity School because the school district feared her husband, according to the Daily Mail. Carie Charlesworths' employment and her four children's enrollment has been revoked after a "bad weekend" with her husband.

Charlesworth received a letter from the Diocese of San Diego stating her release was due to her husband's "twenty-plus year history of violence, abuse, and harassment of people- mostly women." She is now prohibited from working at any school within the district.

"We know from the most recent incident involving you and Mrs.Wright (the principal) while you were still physically at Holy trinity School, that the temporary restraining order in effect were not a deterrent to him. Although we understand he is currently incarcerated, we have no way of knowing how long or short a time he will actually serve and we understand from court filed that he may be released as early as next fall," the letter read. Charleswroth warned her superior of her domestic violence situation. According to The Examiner, she thought notifying the school was an act of "a responsible teacher and out of concern of her students." Parents were notified of a lock-down performed by the school in connection to Charlesworth's warnings. The letter also stated the teacher and her children were on an "indefinite leave."

"They've taken away my ability to care for my kids," Charlesworth told NBC7. "It's not like I can go out and find a job anywhere. I have not been to a Catholic church since this happened,"

The Examiner reports Charlesworth intends to file a lawsuit against the Holy Trinity School on the grounds that she was a religious educator and under the "Ministerial Exception" there is "legal precedence showing she can't be fired without cause just like a priest or pastor."
