Naomi Watts could not have been more terrified to portray the late Princess Diana, and with good reason; Diana is an iconic women.
"Watts faced the challenge of perfecting some of the princess' most iconic looks while not allowing the performance to devolve into mimicry," according to the Los Angeles Times.
Watts apparently worked through her fears as the eagerly anticipated biopic "Diana" released its first one-minute teaser trailer. It offers a look at how Watts portrays Diana's trademark style, her humanitarian work and the paparazzi's interest in her life.
"Diana" follows the story of the Princess of Wales final two years in the life, as her marriage to Prince Charles unraveled and later finding love in a secret relationship with Dr. Hasnat Khan, who is portrayed by "Lost" actor Naveen Andrews. The story is told through the point of view of her bodyguard.
"While Watts's physical transformation into Diana is subtle, in this footage she manages to evoke the glamor and the humanity of the complicated figure, as well as the private emotional ups and downs she was forced to disguise before her public," according to Yahoo! News.
Watts was Vogue Australia's cover girl in January. She told the magazine that playing the role of the Princess helped her understand the impact that constant press invasion had on the Princess' life.
"Most of the time I go completely under the radar but I do understand a little the pressure and how awful it must have been for her," Watts told the magazine. "She was properly isolated because of the media attention and, as a result, paranoid. She didn't know who to trust and that is horrible. Such a lonely idea ... a horrible way to live."
"Diana" is set to open in the U.K on Sept. 20, but no official release date has been set for the United States.
