In the latest virtual reality news, Destination British Columbia is testing Oculus Rift technology in order to provide a virtual experience of going on vacation in the Canadian province.
David Giovondo, associate creative director with Dare Vancouver, described the project, said his team wanted to provide an experience that was both interactive and immersive, and one that could "give people the opportunity to make choices as if they were actually traveling in BC," according to ABC News.
Oculus Rift was bought by Facebook in March for $2 billion. The technology is currently available to developers to try out, but the general public has yet to get their hands on it.
The Destination B.C. team said they used seven HD GoPro cameras to shoot videos and capture different angles over five days, ABC News reported.
With cameras attached to a spherical rig mounted to both a backpack and a hexacopter drone, the team was able to shoot video of the Great Bear Rainforest.
Destination B.C. hopes to start taking people on virtual tours across western Canada next year, PC Magazine reported.
"I think virtual reality video allows Destination BC a really great opportunity to engage the potential traveler in that emotional conversation about why they should visit our destination," said Janice Greenwood-Fraser, the company's manager of trade media relations.
