Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill is being investigated by the Atlanta Police Department due to allegations of sexual assault.
"The Atlanta Police Dept. has been contacted by a female who advised she was sexually assaulted by Sammie Hill, who is an NFL player," the police department said in a release Monday, per Jordan Buie of The Tennessean. "We are working with the female to obtain information about this incident. At this time, the report is not available."
Hill's lawyer, Ed Garland told ESPN.com today that the allegations against his client were entirely false.
"This is a completely bogus charge," said Garland. "Sammie did absolutely nothing wrong. We are cooperating fully with the Atlanta police investigation. I expect there to be no charges brought when the truth is known."
Hill, when questioned about the accusations after practice, said only that he couldn't provide comment.
"I can't talk about it right now," Hill said in a soft voice, shaking his head. "The situation is the situation, so I've got to let my lawyer take care of it... It's just something I've got to try to get past."
Garland allowed that Hill and the woman in question were involved in a "first-time, one-night, consensual" sexual encounter, but there was nothing beyond that.
"Now there is a criminal effort to extort money from him," Garland said. "That's what this amounts to. We may well seek the issuance of a warrant against the complaining party for a scheme to extort money. There is no criminal case."
The Titans issued this statement on the matter: "We will let the police investigate the allegation and we will provide any assistance they need. We have discussed the matter with Sammie and we will continue to gather facts."
