Instagram Reaches 300 Million Monthly Users And Surpasses Twitter

Instagram announced Wednesday that it is now used by 300 million people, and has surpassed Twitter as the second biggest social media platform in the world in the process.

Seventy percent of those who use the photo app are from outside the U.S., and there are currently 70 million photos shared every day, with 30 billion photos shared in total, according to TechCrunch.

"Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community," said Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram.

The achievement puts Instagram ahead of Twitter, which currently has 284 million active users.

Systrom said the company is working on official verification badges to give to brands, athletes and celebrities in order to differentiate legitimate accounts from parody accounts, The Eagle's Rant reported.

Instagram still has a long way before it catches up to Facebook, which currently has over 1.3 billion users.

Other competition social networks include Messenger, which has 500 million users, and WhatsApp, which has 600 million, TechCrunch reported.

Instagram hit 100 million users in February of 2013, 150 million in September of 2013 and 200 million in March of 2014.
