"Star Wars" will have a much bigger presence in Disney theme parks around the world now that Disney owns the IP, Walt Disney Co. head Bob Iger told a gathering at Variety's Dealmakers Breakfast this week.
And those main attractions, Variety reports Iger said, will be based on new sequels such as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and spinoffs, not the older George Lucas' movies.
Part of the reason there has been a delay in getting new Star Wars rides at the parks is Disney's Imagineering team was waiting for director J.J. Abrams to discuss his plans for "The Force Awakens," Iger said.
"We couldn't tell them what was new," the CEO stated. "I slowed it all down so what we come forward with will have a blend of the past, present and maybe the future," referring to the impending sequels and spinoff films. "Now we have a sense of what's in 'Star Wars 8,' and what some of the standalone films will have in them."
The original six films' worlds and characters are already featured in the "Star Tours" attraction at Disney's parks.
The first glimpse at these new, "Star Wars" attractions is expected sometime next year.
