The Tennessee Titans would have the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft were it held tomorrow. At 2-11, they've certainly earned it. Former first-round pick Jake Locker likely won't be with the team next season, and despite some positive comments, it is unlikely that rookie Zach Mettenberger is the long-term answer at the quarterback position either.
"I believe I have shown them enough, I just hope I've shown y'all enough to write good columns from here until next season," Mettenberger said Wednesday.
The Titans failed to win a single game in Mettenberger's six starts, which leads some to believe that the team will be looking at a quarterback with their first-round pick in next year's draft. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt has maintained that Tennessee will evaluate the quarterback situation at the season's end.
"At that point, the organization will also determine whether he's a better option than some of the top quarterbacks who will be available in the 2015 NFL Draft," wrote Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. "Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston are considered the top quarterback prospects in next year's draft class."
The Titans have been without a competent quarterback since Steve McNair was traded to the Baltimore Ravens before the 2006 season. The franchise hasn't had a winning season since 2011, and Whisenhunt's track record with quarterbacks not named Kurt Warner isn't exactly stellar.
However, ESPN's Paul Kuharsky thinks Tennessee might be interested in Alabama star wide receiver and Heisman Trophy finalist Amari Cooper. Although Kuharsky offers a healthy dose of skepticism along with his opinion, adding a dynamic receiver talent such as Cooper would shore up a shaky corps of pass catchers.
Cooper has hauled in 115 catches for 1,656 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. He'd certainly make the job easier for whoever is under center next season for the Titans.
