I'm still not 100 percent sure where I stand on this, but director Ridley Scott recently told MTV that Harrison Ford absolutely loves the script for the upcoming "Blade Runner" sequel. So much so that Ford apparently called it "the best thing he's ever read."
"I sent him [the script] and he said 'Wow, this is the best thing I've ever read' so it's very relevant to what happened [in] the first one," Scott told MTV while doing promotions for his latest opus "Exodus: Gods and Kings." "I'm not just doing a sequel with lots of action and see how far we can go with the special effects, because you can't really."
It's still uncertain if Scott will direct the new "Blade Runner" movie, but it's looking increasingly likely that he won't. The script is ready and we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out. Scott seems to understand the importance of "Blade Runner" to a rather large group of people so, hopefully, there will be no major issues as the project develops.
"[With] Blade Runner we kind of landed on a somehow very credible future. And it's very difficult to change that because it's been so influential with everything else," Scott said.
There are those who are opposed to sequels on principle. I am not one of those people necessarily, but does "Blade Runner," a film that's been vastly important to the sci-fi/dystopian genre, truly need a sequel...or is it better off as a stand-alone experience? I'm leaning towards that it doesn't need a sequel, so here's hoping that Harrison Ford is right about this one. A fantastic script would be an excellent beginning for sure.
