Virtual reality continues to develop, as Runtastic announced on Monday that it has created workout programs for the Oculus Rift headset.
The proof of concept program will let users get some exercise whether they are at home, at work or on vacation. Users can chose different virtual locations to do lunges and squats, such as a beach, hill or black hole, according to PC Magazine.
"The integration of Runtastic and Oculus Rift offers users a totally new experience," Florian Gschwandtner, CEO of the digital health and fitness service, said. "This will be a true game-changer for the entire fitness industry."
Stats from exercises are displayed in a panel floating in front of the user, and a 3D motion tracking camera counts repetitions, Gizmodo reported.
Runtastic is also including virtual trainers in the programs that will demonstrate how each exercise is done, PC Magazine reported. The company's current mobile app can be used to track your activity stats.
Thomas Auinger, head of media at Runtastic, said the company's experiments with virtual reality will give people a new way to improve their health and fitness, referring to virtual reality as "an amazing technological feat and an incredibly fun world to play around in."
Runtastic plans on adding yoga routines and other workouts to the programs, as well as more customizable locations. Fitness fanatics will have their chance to try out Runtastic for Oculus at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, which will run from Jan. 6 to Jan. 9 in Las Vegas.
"The experience feels unbelievably real and is sure to change how people engage in their fitness routines," Gshwandtner said, adding that there's the potential for programs designed for runners and bikers as well. "I'm personally and professionally eager to see what we come up with next!"
