NFL Rumors: New York Jets Options at Quarterback

Even when the New York Jets win, they still lose.

The only saving grace of this disastrous season was the chance to land either Oregon's Marcus Mariota or Florida State's Jameis Winston with a top five pick. But with New York's win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the Jets would have the sixth pick if the NFL draft were held tomorrow. It's likely that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Titans and Washington Redskins could all be interested in a quarterback in the top five.

So what are the Jets to do?

"The Jets are about to undergo major changes with coach Rex Ryan a near lock to be fired in two weeks and general manager John Idzik more than likely to be thrown out with him," Brian Costello of the New York Post wrote. "The biggest chore for that new front office and coaching staff will be figuring out the quarterback spot on this team. Do you try to trade up for one of those stud quarterbacks? Do you draft a project in the middle rounds? Do you take a chance in free agency? Do you give Geno Smith another chance?"

Smith has played okay since returning to the starting lineup three weeks ago, but having him as the top option entering next season has to be a daunting possibility for Jets fans. The free agent market doesn't offer any ideal quick fixes either. The top options are likely to be Brian Hoyer and Mark Sanchez. Hoyer just lost his job to Johnny Manziel in Cleveland and a return to New York for Sanchez could be a little too crazy, even by Jets standards. Sure, maybe the Jets could swing a trade for a guy like Robert Griffin III, but that comes with a whole new host of questions as well.

"The Jets could take Michigan State's Connor Cook or UCLA's Brett Hundley in the middle rounds and try to develop them, but they likely won't help the team in 2015," Costello wrote. "The quarterback headache is going to be a major one for whoever is calling the shots for the Jets next year."
