The next big partnership between two big companies is reportedly going to take place between Twitter and Foursquare with the goal of adding location information to tweets.
A source familiar with the situation says the team-up is planned for 2015 and the geo-based features could be launched as soon as the first quarter of the year, according to Business Insider.
A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the Foursquare partnership, but hinted that the social network's next geo features could be similar to Foursquare's check-ins, local recommendations and one that handles content around a user's current whereabouts.
Location-based features are a big focus for Twitter, as the site is already able to find a user's location when he or she signs up, and users have the option to share location in their bio, CNET reported. The company believes its services can improve with more of these features, saying at an analyst event earlier this year it could help identify exactly where conversations are taking place while helping users find tweets from places they like, both nearby and far away.
Foursquare is currently more focused on helping users find places they want to go to and providing content based on their location and interests.
Twitter recently ran a test in a few major cities involving location-based features, in which some new users were shown tweets tied to a location where they registered for the site, Business Insider reported. These users were expected to reopen Twitter within 30 days more than users who weren't shown location-based content.
"Organizing the world's public conversations in real-time can offer limitless opportunities," a Twitter executive said.
Foursquare declined to comment on the partnership with Twitter.
