"Suicide Squad" has assembled an impressive team to fill its ranks. The addition of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller only elevates the already stellar cast.
Davis will play the DC Comics villain and prison warden in the upcoming Warner Bros. film, according to the Latino-Review. Amanda Waller was a former congressional aide and government agent who often gets put in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former supervillains working in return for amnesty.
Davis' participation in the film hinges on production coordinating schedules with her TV work on ABC's "How to Get Away With Murder." She recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her starring role as Annalise Keating on the Shonda Rhimes-produced series.
The character of Amanda Waller has appeared in other animated series and live-action TV and movies. C.C.H. Pounder voiced Waller in the animated TV series "Justice League Unlimited" and the video games "Batman: Arkham Origins" and "Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate." Angela Bassett portrayed the character in the Ryan Reynolds film "Green Lantern," and Cynthia Addai-Robinson recently played her as the director of A.R.G.U.S. on The CW's "Arrow."
"Suicide Squad" revealed its main cast earlier this month: Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. Jared Leto will have the difficult task of playing The Joker, last portrayed on screen by the late Heath Ledger, who received a posthumous Oscar for his role.
The movie opens in theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
