Elton John and David Furnish entered into one of the first civil partnerships in Britain when the country introduced the measure in 2005. They will make their union official when the two marry this weekend.
John and Furnish will hold a private ceremony following Britain's legalization of same-sex marriage in March, according to the Associated Press. Same-sex couples previously could enter civil partnerships that guaranteed the same legal status of married couples but without the title.
Rules went into effect last week that allowed couples already engaged in a civil partnership to change their status to married. They only need to fill out some paperwork, but couples can hold ceremonies to accompany the legal procedures.
The "Rocket Man" singer and his filmmaker partner began their relationship in 1993. The ceremony for their civil partnership was held at the Windsor Guildhall, the town hall of Windsor, England. The couple has two sons born via a surrogate.
