California Driver, Suspected Drunk, Crashes Into Crowd Leaving Christmas Event; 3 Dead

A suspected drunk driver killed three people after crashing into a group of pedestrians leaving a Christmas event at a church on Wednesday.

The group of pedestrians just left a Christmas pageant for children at a Redondo Beach church and was crossing the street when the driver rammed into them, killing two elderly women and another unidentified woman, NBC Los Angeles reported.

"The crosswalk was full and the light was red. Someone ran a red light and...bodies started flying. It was pretty horrible," Marc Zonno, who witnessed the incident, told the station. "They flew at least two or three cars down the street, it was pretty bad. But I'm hoping everybody's going to be OK."

About 12 others, mostly children, were also wounded in the Wednesday night crash at Vincent Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

Two of the victims have been identified as 81-year-old Mary Wilson and 87-year-old Saeko Matsumura, the Los Angeles County Coroner confirmed.

Witnesses said most of the pedestrians were leaving a Christmas concert at St. James Catholic Church.

"Mostly children, like 8 or 10 years old," witness Jana Sigler told the station. "Yeah, it's so sad, and most of them are really hurt bad. They already took a bunch of them to the hospital, mostly head injuries."

The driver, identified as Margo Bronstein, ended up crashing into a second car. She was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and suspected driving under the influence, Redondo Beach police told the station.
