Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been benched by head coach Marc Trestman in favor of backup Jimmy Clausen. Trestman cited Cutler's poor play and propensity for turnovers recently as the reason for the move. However, Clausen is just 1-9 as a starter in the NFL.
Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com reported that two unnamed players admitted that the locker room was "confused and uncomfortable" with how Cutler's benching was handled. Dickerson wrote that the two were "a pair of accomplished and respected Chicago Bears players."
Normally, this type of move wouldn't be viewed as controversial, but Bears players are conflicted due to recent events.
Offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer heavily criticized Cutler anonymously, and then admitted to the quotes as a means of apology. However, he was met with no punishment or action taken by the Bears. Players seem upset that Cutler was punished for poor play, but Kromer was not disciplined for poor judgment.
"The Bears are rapidly descending chaos, and players and coaches are all beginning to act in ways to cover their own backsides for the future," wrote Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk.
