There's a rumor making the rounds that Chip Kelly runs a "quarterback-friendly" offense.
If there were ever a quarterback in the NFL who could use a coach who believes in a system like that - whether or not it's actually true - it's recently benched Chicago Bears signal-caller, Jay Cutler.
Cutler, signed this past offseason to a major new deal, looks like he's already on the outs in Chicago. Could he find a home in the "comfy" confines of Philly and Kelly's fast-paced, up-tempo offense?
He's certainly got the physical tools - he's underrated athletically and could actually pick up serious chunks of yards with keepers on the read-option. His arm is big - howitzer big - and with a strong running game to support him, he might be able to offset some of his own turnovers - he's thrown more than 18 interceptions in three different seasons.
In Philly, Nick Foles, while he's certainly shown flashes, hasn't yet proven that he's "the guy." Mark Sanchez is exactly what everyone thought he was - a good back-up who can steal you some games but will struggle when asked to carry the load or bring the team from behind to victory. Matt Barkley is...still on the roster.
"Perhaps, Cutler is a victim of an overrated coaching staff with a terrible offensive coordinator that speaks openly to the media," writes Mike Kaye of BleedingGreenNation.com. "That said, is he really better than what the Eagles have? Sure, he's more mobile than Foles and he's got a better arm than Mark Sanchez, but he also costs significantly more. He has played in only one more playoff game than Foles with six more years of experience."
Between Foles and Sanchez this season, the Eagles have 23 passing touchdowns, 19 interceptions, 2,915 yards and 10 fumbles.
Cutler, in 14 games of action, has 28 passing touchdowns, 18 interceptions, 3,640 yards and 12 fumbles.
At 31, it would be hard to envision the Eagles giving up much, if anything for Cutler's services, especially as flawed as he seems to be - at his age it's probably impossible to work out many of his already ingrained traits and tendencies.
But with Sanchez proving himself back-up worthy, Foles still a question mark and Marcus Mariota seemingly out of reach, the Eagles, like many teams in the league, are still in search of their franchise signal-caller.
If anything, it seems Cutler could end up in Philly as a reclamation project if released by the Bears in the offseason, like Sanchez before him.
