The New York Knicks reportedly contacted the Boston Celtics about a potential trade for Rajon Rondo. ESPN's Ian Begley reported Knicks president Phil Jackson has been "very active" pursuing potential trade targets, and at least one of his targets is Boston's All-Star point guard.
Rondo's name has been linked to myriad rumors for years, and this season is no different. His name exploded late this week, and a trade before the Feb. 19 deadline could be imminent. A number of teams - such as the Houston Rockets, the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers - have put their names into the Rondo trade sweepstakes, including the Knicks.
Per Begley:
"The New York Knicks are one of several teams that the Boston Celtics have engaged in trade discussions involving point guard Rajon Rondo, sources have told ESPN.com's Marc Stein. ... The Knicks, according to a league source, have been 'very active' working the phones since Dec. 15, the date at which free agents can be traded."
New York does have a first-round draft pick next season, but with a number of teams vying for Rondo, it's almost certain Celtics president Danny Ainge will want more.
Dallas appears to be the frontrunners to land Rondo, who reportedly has indicated he would be willing to re-sign with Dallas after the season if he's traded there. Houston is also considered to be a contender, and Rondo reportedly indicated he would be OK playing for the Rockets beyond this season if he's dealt there.
If Rondo is shipped to New York, it would be curious to see how he meshes in Jackson's triangle offense. The system typically requires a 1-guard who can shoot efficiently from the field, something that Rondo isn't known for.
Nonetheless, he would be an upgrade over veteran Jose Calderon.
