Eight children were found stabbed to dead along with an injured woman in a gruesome scene in Australian on Friday, NBC News reported.
The ages of the children ranged from 18 months to 15 years old. The home was in Cairns, which sits in the far northeastern section of the country. Authorities were called due to a woman with serious injuries. When they arrived, they found the dead children along with a 34-year-old woman. While details were kept quiet, police reassured that it wasn't a threat to the community.
No arrests have been made yet, but the woman is cooperating with the investigation.
"As it stands at the moment, there's no need for the public to be concerned about this other than the fact that it's a tragic, tragic event," Cairns Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar told reporters. "The situation is well controlled."
Lisa Thaiday, who said she is the woman's cousin, said the all the children were her's and they were siblings. An older, 20-year-old brother came home and found his family dead at home.
"These events are extremely distressing for everyone of course, and police officers aren't immune from that. We're human beings as well," Asnicar said, Yahoo News reported.
The news comes shortly after a deadly hostage siege in a Sydney cafe earlier this week. Two out of 18 total hostages were killed along with the gunman after a 16 hour stand off.
