If you haven't noticed by now, Instagram is cleaning up your followers by removing accounts it considers to be spam or inactive. That means many people, including your favorite celebrities, will lose hundreds, thousands and even millions of Instagram followers.
The site made the announcement earlier this week warning users that they may notice a decline in the number of accounts they follow and the ones that follow them.
"We're in the process of fixing an issue that incorrectly includes inactive or fake accounts in follower/following lists," the company wrote on its Help page. "We want to maintain the best possible experience on Instagram, so we do our best to remove spam, fake accounts and other people and posts that don't follow our Community Guidelines. As we remove these accounts, some people may notice a decrease in their follower/following counts."
By the end of December, Instagram should be free of fake and inactive accounts. Data pulled by Zach Allia analyzed the Instagram accounts of celebrities and made a list of the Hollywood stars hit the hardest by the "Instagram Purge."
According to the data, pop singer Justin Bieber lost the most followers with 3.5 million. That also dropped the Biebs from the No. 1 most-followed Instagram account to the second. He's now behind Kim Kardashian who lost 1.3 million of her 23 million followers.
Ariana Grande still has more than 20 million followers on the photo-sharing site but she lost 1.5 million in the purge. Both Rihanna and Selena Gomez lost a little more than a million followers each while Kendall Jenner dropped 906,000.
Beyonce and One Direction's Harry Styles both lost around 800,000 followers and Taylor Swift lost 725,000.
"I lost 20K followers in the #InstagramPurge and I'm feeling cleaner than ever! Only real people, please! Twitter, next?" Andy Cohen joked on Friday.
Nicki Minaj also tweeted about the purge, writing, "Them 500K ppl really thought they was following me tho. Yall played yall self."
Celebs weren't the only ones who noticed huge drops in their followers. According to AdWeek, Instagram itself lost 18.9 million followers, National Geographic lost 230,000 and Victoria's Secret lost 215,000.
