In the Midwestern U.S. gas prices have fallen below $2 a gallon at many gas stations.
According to USA Today, Springfield, Mo., reported gas prices as low as $1.96 per gallon of regular unleaded as of Friday at some gas stations.
Gasbuddy.com's senior petroleum analyst, Patrick DeHaan, said he thinks the prices will drop another 5 to 15 cents per gallon in the coming days.
USA Today said Missouri last saw gas drop to $1.99 per gallon in June 2009.
Other states have reported a drop in gas prices as well. According to the Cherokee County Herald, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee saw gas prices dip below $2 at some stations Friday.
Alabama reported its lowest gas price as $1.87 per gallon Friday. Georgia saw its price drop to $1.93 per gallon. Tennessee said its lowest gas price was $1.89 per gallon.
However, DeHaan said not all states can expect to crack the $2 barrier because of higher fuel taxes. States such as California, Hawaii and New York have gas taxes higher than 50 cents per gallon.
USA Today said gas prices can dip below $2 in some high-tax states. For example, Greenville, Mich., reported that some Citgo stations had prices drop to $1.99 as of Tuesday. Michigan's gas tax is 57.43 cents of the per-gallon price.
Saudi Arabian oil officials cut crude oil prices in September, DeHaan said, which caused the current drop in gas prices.
